Draft EIS on Ship Channel Permit Published - July 20, 2007

The US Army Corps of Engineers has published a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) on the Calhoun Port Authority's application for a permit to improve the Matagorda Ship Channel.

The Draft EIS outlines project alternatives that were considered and presents an analysis of the environmental impacts of each possible alternative.

An executive summary and the two-volume DEIS document are available for review and downloading online at the Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, website at www.swg.usace.army.mil.

Copies of the DEIS are available for review at the public libraries in Port Lavaca, Point Comfort, Port O'Connor, Victoria, Edna, Palacios and Bay City, and at the Calhoun Port Authority administrative offices.

The Corps of Engineers will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2007, in the Bauer Community Center in Port Lavaca. An open house will begin at 5 p.m. The public comment period on the DEIS will close on Sept. 4, 2007.

The Port Authority is seeking a permit that would allow future deepening and widening of the entire 26 mile long Matagorda Ship Channel from where it begins in the Gulf of Mexico to the Point Comfort Turning Basin which would be expanded. The Port Authority proposes to deepen the channel from the current depth of 36 feet to an operating depth of 44 feet. It is requesting that the channel be widened from a bottom width of 200 feet to a new bottom width of 400 feet. The depth and width of the channel have not changed since it was first constructed in the early 1960s.

The channel improvements are needed to serve the larger ships in the world's modern fleet.
